Unicode 10 adds 56 new emoji, likely coming with iOS 11 final


Unicode Consortium announcing The Unicode® Standard, Version 10.0 which has officially added 56 new emoji characters which is likely to come with the final release of iOS 11. In addition, Unicode 10 adds a set of Typicon marks and symbols, a Bitcoin sign, 8518 characters, four new scripts with altogether 136,690 characters.
Version 10.0 of the Unicode Standard is now available. For the first time, both the core specification and the data files are available on the same date. Version 10.0 adds 8,518 characters, for a total of 136,690 characters. These additions include four new scripts, for a total of 139 scripts, as well as 56 new emoji characters.

The new scripts and characters in Version 10.0 add support for lesser-used languages and unique written requirements worldwide, including:
  • Masaram Gondi, used to write Gondi in Central and Southeast India
  • Nüshu,used by women in China to write poetry and other discourses until the late twentieth century
  • Soyombo and Zanabazar Square, used in historic Buddhist texts to write Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Mongolian
  • Syriac letters used for writing Suriyani Malayalam, also known as Garshuni and as Syriac Malayalam
  • Gujarati signs used for the transliteration of the Arabic script into Gujarati by Ismaili Khoja communities
  • A set of 285 Hentaigana characters used in Japan (historic variants of Hiragana characters)
  • CJK Extension F (7,473 Han characters)

New 56 emojis include a mage, coconut, fairy, broccoli, vampire, sandwich and many more which are listed below;

Star-Struck, Face With Raised Eyebrow, Exploding Head, Crazy Face, Face With Symbols Over Mouth, Face Vomiting, Shushing Face, Face With Hand Over Mouth, Face With Monocle, Child, Adult, Older Adult, Woman With Headscarf, Bearded Person, Breast-Feeding, Merperson, Elf, Genie, Zombie, Person in Steamy Room, Person Climbing, Person in Lotus Position, Love-You Gesture, Palms Up Together, Brain, Orange Heart, Scarf, Gloves, Coat, Socks, Billed Cap, Zebra, Giraffe, Hedgehog, Sauropod, T-Rex, Cricket, Pretzel, Cut of Meat, Bowl With Spoon, Canned Food, Dumpling, Fortune Cookie, Takeout Box, Pie, Cup With Straw, Chopsticks, Flying Saucer, Sled, Curling Stone.

Unicode 10.0 includes a number of changes and is likely to be added with iOS 11 final release later this year. Because previously Unicode 9.0 was made official with 72 new emojis which was integrated with iOS 10.2 release so it is expected with the same pattern this year too with iOS 11. It would be a smaller update for Apple to make an update in iOS 11.
